Medical Response Paramedic – Salt Lake City Fire Department

The Salt Lake City Fire Department (SLCFD) is seeking experienced and dedicated Medical Response Paramedics (MRPs) to join our team. This is a full-time, non-firefighting position focused on providing advanced life support, emergency medical care, and patient transport. MRPs work in collaboration with firefighter/EMTs and social workers as part of the Medical Response Team, ensuring high-quality medical care in emergency situations. Position Details

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: $58,989/year with incremental raises leading up to $94,126/year.
  • Tier II Utah Firefighter Retirement System participation
  • Opportunities for ongoing training and professional development

Work Schedule

  • 40-hour workweek
  • Shift options: Monday-Wednesday or Thursday-Saturday
  • Day 1: 14-hour shift (7:30 AM – 9:30 PM)
  • Days 2 & 3: 13-hour shifts (7:30 AM – 8:30 PM)

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic and advanced life support to patients in emergency situations
  • Work closely with firefighter/EMTs and social workers to ensure effective patient care
  • Operate within SLCFD medical protocols and procedures
  • Maintain a high level of medical proficiency and readiness
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development

This position does not include firefighting responsibilities.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a valid NREMT or State of Utah Paramedic license
  • Must meet the medical standards of NFPA 1582
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must successfully complete a pre-hire physical ability test
  • Must maintain all required licensures and certifications throughout employment

Hiring Standards

Candidates may be disqualified for the following reasons:

Drug Use History

  • Use of hallucinogens, narcotics, or opioids without a prescription within the last four years
  • Use of cannabis or mushrooms without a prescription within the last one year

Criminal Record

  • Any felony charge or conviction may disqualify a candidate

ABOUT US

SALT LAKE CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT

SLC Fire has over 350 members serving 200,00 residents, with a business and tourism population that nearly doubles this number, within the city’s 110 square miles.

  • We are an all-hazards response department with over 80% of our annual 31,000 (2022) calls involving a medical situation.
  • We operate 14 fire stations which include: 12 engines, 3 trucks, 2 quints, and 7 aircraft rescue vehicles, 4 medical response teams, and 7 wildland response apparatus.
  • We operate on a three-platoon system with crews rotating every 48 hours at the fire stations.
  • Our crews provide structural protection to high-rise, industrial, commercial, and residential areas. Additionally, we service two major freeway intersections and wildland urban-interface.
  • Our specialty certifications include Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF), Engineer, Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Technician, Heavy Rescue Technician (HRT), Fire Investigation, Paramedic, and Swift Water Rescue.
  • In addition to emergency response, our firefighters’ daily routine involves vehicle maintenance, equipment checks, job-related training, physical fitness, community outreach, and public education.

Q: Does SLC Fire allow tattoos? A: Yes.  Members may have visible tattoos or body art with the following conditions:

  • Tattoos and body art cannot be obscene, offensive, distract from a professional appearance, or interfere with on-duty actions and responsibilities.
  • Unauthorized areas: Head, face, ears, scalp.
  • Restricted areas: Members are allowed to display one neck tattoo that does not extend more than one inch in any direction, and members are allowed to have a single finger or hand tattoo or body art that extends from the arm to the hand.
